Planning: Our guides will work with you to create the ideal programming for your institution's needs. Whether you're planning a team-building day adventure or an educational multi-night backpack, we can work with any group size or education level, from elementary school to graduate school.
Itinerary: Our team of guides draws from a wide-range of backgrounds in education, experiential learning, youth programming, and team-building and will help you create an itinerary and choose a location based on the programming and outcomes goals for your group. We'll provide a list of potential locations pulled from our extensive knowledge of trails in the Hudson Valley, Catskills, and Adirondacks. We can choose trails and wilderness destinations in the backcountry that focus on geology, wildlife, local history, and more. We also work with Leave No Trace Master Educators who can open your adventure with a LNT lesson.
Before your adventure: From pre-trip gear arrangements, to transportation, menu planning that covers all dietary needs, and detailed daily itineraries, we can guide you through each part of our experiential learning adventure. We are happy to arrange an in-person visit at your institution to answer questions and provide an introduction to outdoor adventure for your students before your trip begins. We will provide gear lists and can help arrange gear rentals with our preferred partners.
During your adventure: Your trip will be led by a combination of experienced NYS licensed lead guides and apprentices-in-training depending the on the size of your group. Our guides have wilderness first aid certifications, and we have detailed emergency plans and procedures and extensive liability insurance in place. We pride ourselves on fostering a welcoming, safe environment for all of our adventurers. Most of educational trips include a combination of on-trail time and educational programming, such as a hike and lesson in psychology of survival, or a paddling trip with a hands-on ecology lesson.

Eleven-day canoe and backpack summer camp: A summer camp wanted to offer their campers a true backcountry experience in addition to their times in cabins. We arranged an eleven-day overnight with a combination of canoeing, hiking, fishing, and outdoor education while maintaining a kosher menu and observing Shabbat.
A day of adventure for high school students: To encourage bonding and socializing after the isolation of the pandemic, a high school arranged a day adventure for their students. This casual day of hiking allowed students to bond on trail away from the pressures of the classroom in a safe environment, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
An educational winter overnight for graduate students: On a two-night, three-day overnight, environmental education graduate students learned practical outdoor skills to supplement their education, with the opportunity to work with guides to explore their personal areas of interest in the outdoors, like mycology and lichenology.
Our pricing depends on the size of your group, optional transportation and meals, and your itinerary. "Besides being extremely experienced and professional outdoor guides, Dave and his crew from Destination Backcountry understand and connect with kids in authentic and meaningful ways. Each day we were with them, the guides, through both word and deed helped our kids understand the importance of both independence and pushing yourself beyond your limits and interdependence and the importance of being a fully integrated member of a group."
