Slide Mountain and Mocha (2/15)

Required Winter Catskill 3500 Peak. Slide Mountain is the tallest peak in the Catskills, but its gently graded trail makes this high peak surprisingly approachable—offering incredible views with less effort than many other Catskill peaks. At the summit, we’ll be treated to stunning vistas over the Burroughs Range and a monument to revered naturalist John Burroughs. This hike also includes a fun and scenic stretch past icy streams at lower elevations and a gorgeous trail through majestic conifers (evergreens). Before our descent, we'll warm up with hot coffee, mocha, and hot cocoa at a scenic spot.

Why we love this hike: This hike offers a big reward for less effort, with great views and a moderate hike—with the added bonus of a refreshing mountain spring just past the summit that has the best tasting water in New York (in our personal opinion!). This is the type of hike that will say with you long after the trek is over.

The Destination Backcountry difference: As we make our way up Slide Mountain, your expert guide will point out incredible examples of Catskill geology. You'll witness the dramatic transformation from a mixed hardwood forest to the beautiful spruce-fir forest at higher elevations, offering a unique glimpse into the diversity of the Catskill landscape.
